What You Need to Know Before You Click
By Creative Blog Africa

A tempting message promising 25GB of free data from MTN or Airtel can easily catch anyone’s attention, especially at a time when mobile data has become an essential part of everyday life.
But before you click that link, enter your phone number or share the message with your friends, pause and verify it first.
Viral “free data” offers are commonly used to attract unsuspecting internet users to suspicious websites and forms.
What looks like a generous giveaway may instead be an attempt to collect personal information, generate traffic for a fraudulent website or trick users into sharing the message further.
Is the 25GB Giveaway Really From MTN or Airtel?
The safest answer is: don’t assume it is genuine simply because the message carries the MTN or Airtel name or logo.
Telecommunications companies do run legitimate promotions, but genuine offers are normally communicated through their official websites, verified social media accounts, apps, SMS channels or other approved platforms.
For example, MTN Nigeria currently publishes its official promotions and data-related offers on its website.
Its Y’ello Data Gifting promotion directs customers to official channels including the my MTN NG app, USSD, Zigi and MTN’s eShop.
That is why any “25GB giveaway” link circulating on WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram or other platforms should be verified through the network operator’s official channels before you take any action.
Why These Fake Giveaways Are Dangerous
The promise is usually simple: Congratulations! You have won 25GB of free data.
Then comes the catch.
You may be asked to: Click a strange or unfamiliar website.
Enter your phone number or other personal information.
Answer questions to qualify.
Share the message with several WhatsApp groups or contacts.
Click another link to activate the data.
Provide information that should never be requested for a simple data promotion.
These steps can expose users to phishing, unwanted messages, fraudulent schemes or other online risks.
The biggest warning sign is when an offer puts pressure on you to act immediately before you have had time to verify where it came from.
How to Spot a Fake Data Giveaway
Before believing any “free 25GB” message, ask yourself these simple questions
1. Did it come from an official source?
Check the telecom company’s official website or verified social media pages.
Do not rely on a forwarded WhatsApp message as proof that an offer is genuine.
MTN Nigeria
AIRTEL Nigeria
2. Does the link look suspicious?
Look carefully at the website address before clicking.
A page can contain the MTN or Airtel logo and still have nothing to do with the actual company.
www.mtn.com.ng
www.airtel.com.ng
3. Are they asking for too much information?
Be extremely careful if a supposed giveaway asks for passwords, banking information, PINs, OTPs or other sensitive details.
Never provide sensitive information simply because a website promises free data.
4. Are you being forced to share it?
A message telling you to “share with 10 groups before you receive your data” is a major reason to stop and verify the promotion.
5. Can you find the same promotion on the official website?
This is one of the simplest checks.
If a major giveaway is supposedly happening, look for it through the network operator’s official channels instead of trusting the forwarded message.
What Should You Do If You Receive the Message?
Don’t panic, and don’t rush.
Do not click the link immediately.
Instead: Stop → Verify → Then Act.
If you cannot confirm the promotion through the company’s official channels, treat the message as suspicious.
You should also avoid forwarding it to friends and family.
Sharing an unverified message can unintentionally help a scam spread to more people.
If you have already entered personal information on a suspicious website, take the situation seriously and monitor your accounts and communications for unusual activity.
The Bigger Lesson
The attraction of “free data” is understandable.
But scammers understand that too.
They use attractive rewards, urgency and familiar brand names to make people lower their guard.
That is why digital awareness is just as important as having a strong internet connection.
Not every message that looks official is actually official.
And not every giveaway that promises something free is worth clicking.
